About the job
About Us
After more than a decade in leadership roles within nonprofit organizations, Nigel Bearman founded BearmanCPA PLLC in 2006 to specifically focus on the needs of nonprofits. Today, the firm works exclusively with North Carolina public charter schools.

Over the past decade, North Carolina’s public charter school sector has surged in both size and influence. Since the statewide cap of 100 charter schools was lifted in 2011, the number of schools has more than doubled. Today, over 200 charter schools serve more than 150,000 students—and enrollment continues to climb. Demand far exceeds supply, with more than 160 schools reporting waiting lists that total 74,000 students statewide. Reflecting this growth, we’ve expanded our own charter school partnerships dramatically, growing from a single client to fourteen in just the past few years.

Recognizing tremendous growth potential, we are seeking a CPA to join our team to help free up the founder’s time while gradually assuming responsibility for the firm’s day-to-day operations. Our firm delivers a comprehensive suite of services, including monthly accounting and payroll, pre-audit support, LINQ assistance, financial forecasting for bond issues, post-issuance compliance, and IRS communications. We work hard to provide dependable, high-quality services that meet the needs of our clients.

Please note: we are not auditors and do not provide assurance services.

Join Our Team
We believe in building strong relationships and making a real difference for the charter schools we serve. We’re a small but growing team that values collaboration, curiosity, and integrity. If you’re passionate about accounting and want to work in an environment where your ideas matter and your growth is supported, we’d love to meet you.

Must-Haves
We’re looking for a full-time, remote Director of Accounting Services to support charter schools across North Carolina. This role is about more than numbers—it’s about leadership and teamwork. You’ll gradually take on the day-to-day operations of the firm, working closely with the founder and leading a dedicated team. Your responsibilities will include managing staff, hiring new team members, and building strong relationships with our charter school clients.
On a daily basis, you’ll oversee financial reporting, prepare and analyze statements, and ensure compliance with accounting standards. You’ll also guide the accounting team, provide strategic financial insight, and help us improve workflows as we grow.

Here’s what we’re looking for:

  • High Energy – A CPA/controller ready to roll up your sleeves and apply your experience to keep things running smoothly.
  • Humility – Someone who’s not afraid to say, “I don’t know yet,” and eager to learn the unique world of charter school accounting.
  • Confidence – Comfortable stepping in, taking ownership, and suggesting improvements that position us for future success.
  • Quick Study – Interested in streamlining processes and making back-office operations more efficient.
  • Empathy & Humor – Appreciates the hard work of our current team and brings a positive, supportive approach to leadership.
  • Ambition – Excited about the opportunity to grow into a leadership role, help make a good company great, and earn an equity partnership along the way.

This is a partner-track position, offering the chance to advance your career while making a real impact.

Commitment to Our Clients – Bearman Core Beliefs

We’re flexible, responsive to changing needs, and committed to continuous improvement.
Responsiveness
We know that time matters. Our culture of prompt communication helps create efficiencies and keeps things moving for our clients.
